Photos from SK1c W.Elsworth Smith (Smitty) taken in China during the last months of WWII, 1945. Three years earlier, USN Commander Milton E. Miles proposed the creation of Naval Group China (NGC) and of the Sino-American Cooperative Organization (SACO), operated in China jointly by the secret service of the Chinese Nationalist government and American Naval intelligence (about 2000 sailors and Marines) for the duration of the war. The "Rice Paddy Navy" operated in the China-Burma-India theater advising and training Chinese guerillas, forecasting weather in anticipation of potential US landing, and intercepting Japanese radio traffic.
